Presented by:
Rev. Matthew P. Binkewicz, MA, FT
Clinical research and anecdotal evidence indicate that funeral directors are at a greater risk for compassion fatigue and burnout because of the required duties of their job. They are directly exposed to trauma, witness the trauma as it occurs to someone else, and learn that the trauma occurred to a friend or community member. Additionally, funeral directors experience repeated exposure to graphic details of the trauma through routine duties, bereavement counseling and life review with the deceased’s family and friends. These daily events contribute to compassion fatigue, burnout, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder (STSD).
Through interactive participation, case study, and role-playing, this one-hour power point presentation will define key elements of compassion fatigue, examine and explore individual risk factors, provide tools for personal assessment, and offer solutions to managing compassion fatigue.
